Yesterday, I had the same problem, with the same kernel 2.6.24-23-server:

I might have been allocating too much memory, altough swap should have
been able to handle it...

It's a quad opteron quad-core with 32Gb ram and 24gb swap.

The kern.log continues like this forever, and the machine completely locked up 
as I tried to reboot it. It needed a manual hard reset...
