I too am having the same problems:
Jaunty 64 bit AMD, Toshiba L300D with Insyde H20 Bios

Acpitools tells me I don't have a Toshiba
Tried acpi_osi="Linux" to no avail. Disassembled DSDT table, reassembled with
no errors.
Tried acpi_osi="Windows 2006"; "Windows NT" ( got these from the table) with
some changes, all worse!

Attached is output from Acpitool. Notice there are no thermal trip points set,
and most of the devices at the end are disabled.
Also attached is the output from /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THZN/polling_frequency
and trip_points.
Notice polling is disabled, and the only trip point is 105 degrees which
doesn't give me much comfort.

Any help would be appreciated - I'll be the guinea pig !

By the way, all is well with the fan in Vista, but that is about all
that is well in Vista.
