I've just tested Ubuntu 9.04; I'm using Thinkpad T60p; Kernel 2.6.28-11; I tried:
git clone git://git.savannah.gnu.org/emacs.git which downloads the latest emacs: computing the deltas is rather CPU intensive, which makes it a rather good test.
