Unfortunately it seems this bug is still an issue. This issue appears to be related to a firmware bug as described at http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1703
Can you confirm this issue exists with the most recent Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-9.04-desktop . It seems to be fixed in 2.6.28 kernels that Jaunty uses. Even a Live-CD test will allow us to see how easy it is to backport the changes to Intrepid. Please let us know your results.
