I am having this same problem on an x86 version of Ubuntu 9.04. I am running a Dell 1420, and I can only see an option for "digital input source" in ALSA. While this enables the mic, I have no slider to control the recording level of the mic.
Using audacity, I can record from my digital webcam mic, but it is extremely soft.
