okay.. that didn't really fix things for me.. well, maybe it fixed about 50% of the problem.
I tried qetuR's method, checked the box, removed my workaround to force- start compiz at startup, and then restarted my computer. I suppose metacity's compositing manager started properly, or at least it didn't give Avant Windows Manager any major problems, but suddenly I had 4 desktop spaces instead of two.. and Extra visual effects options was still not available - nor was "Normal". After starting the compiz fusion icon, selecting compiz as opposed to metacity, and restarting the windows manager, things were back to normal, but still, that's just a workaround. I'd like the actual solution.. I'll keep looking into it... -- warning: Screen isn't composited.
