I can confirm this is present on my Thinkpad Z61t and my roommate is also getting this behavior on his R61. Both the machines have hda-intel cards and both are running standard Ubuntu 9.04 i386 build (not netbook remix, kubuntu, etc). pidgin notifications are generally the worst offenders, but I have occasionally heard it with other applications.
