Peter, thanks for your response. The edgy kernel is still on my machine and still listed in grub, so I booted it... I wasn't sure what you meant by "ensure you have a valid swap partition," so I asked Google and found bug 66637. Before following the instructions there I checked /etc /initramfs-tools/conf.d/initramfs-tools/resume against the UUID in /dev/disks/by-uuid and they matched. So I tried hibernate, and it worked. Just hibernated again in the middle of composing this and firefox still had my entry... so I guess it smells like a duplicate. Assuming that the act of installing the new kernel happened to straighten out the initramfs setting as a side-effect?
Interestingly, bcm43xx is working with the edgy kernel now, though I will probably go back to ndiswrapper for now since bcm43xx has some quirks as mentioned above.
