Further experiment. Changed the AC power timeouts to 1min and 2min. The computer did not go to standby at that time on ac power or on battery. Aftersomething like 20 or 30 mins (I was cooking so didnt observe!) the screen blanked but the fan remained on and the discs did not spin down.
