I found a workaround for the problem described above (at least it works on my 
computer, too):

Make sure you have a recent
/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/20-video-quirk-pm-
samsung.fdi (from hal-info package) installed.

Use "radeonfb" kernel module instead of "vesafb":
- add kernel boot option "video=radeonfb:mode_option=1024x768...@60" 
(resolution might differ of course)
- add "radeonfb" entry in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
- run update-grub and update-initramfs
- reboot
