That machine has since been upgraded via update-manager to 8.04; I haven't needed to install such a system since then. However, the wiki page was changed to remove the section I mentioned (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto?action=diff&rev2=63&rev1=62), so I'm guessing it's no longer an issue.
