This time it was a no-boot situation. Twice in a row, the screen would freeze before getting to the log in screen.
On the third try, I went into Recovery mode, ran apt-get update and apt- get upgrade to no apparent effect. I then ran "startx", which did get me to a gui screen. The keyboard and mouse both locked up, the screen was back to a default top and bottom panel with the default wallpaper. There was a series of 12 or so icons dancing across the bottom panel, and two error messages on the screen. I could only read the top one as the second one was under the first. The top one said there was an error in the panel applets and offered two options: reload or quit. No input from the keyboard or mouse, so I was forced into a hard restart. On the hard restart, it logged in normally, under the regular start option, but immediately threw a kernel oops and an apport bug bug report.
