As documented in http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/security/SunProviders.html#SunPCSCProvider the /lib directory is not used.
I reported the problem to SUN and it should be corrected. A workaround is: " As a workaround for these issues, you can change the system property sun.security.smartcardio.library to point it to whatever .so file you want so that you don't have to play with symlinks or copying files around.
