Success. I gave up on Intrepid 8.10, installed Jaunty 9.04 and finally got my Broadcom BCM4318 wireless card to work. I loaded NDISwrapper through the Gnome add/remove application. I did several reboots and was just familiarizing myself with Gnome packages, had finished running computer janitor and was working on configuring the Rhythmbox at the time, when suddenly a decent-sized box appeared just below the toolbar that showed my neighbors wireless routers. From there, getting my hidden wireless to work took only a few seconds. Tested the connection, rebooted, and tested the connection again. I will move the laptop away from the router. I expect the range will be fine since it detects my neighbors signals.
