I followed some guidelines that I found here: http://ubuntu-

Which led me to looking at my "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" file.  It was mostly
empty, so I added in the following lines, as indicated in the link
above.  And now everything is running much better.  I'm sorry if this
was already covered somewhere in this thread.
