Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Strange problem with compiz (I think), I don't know how to diagnose it
further without help.

I tried the "desktop effects" applet in the control center (I test
regularly to see if it works correctly; it never did...) and activated
the effects. compiz replaced the window manager, but it wasn't working
(no window decorations visible, I couldn't raise windows from the task-
bar, but the application panel worked and I could start a new terminal.

(gnome-window-decorations was among the running processes, not sure if
that was supposed to happen. compiz.real was there too.)

The bug is that I couldn't disable compiz. The button on the "desktop
effects" applet did something, not sure what (the desktop was redrawn),
but the window decorations didn't appear.

I tried killing compiz.real in the console, but it got restarted (which
I guess was normal). I also tried "metacity --replace", but that didn't
work either. The compiz.real process was still running. (I didn't think
to check if it's pid changed, sorry.)

I was only able to fix it with "killall -9 compiz.real && metacity
--replace".

Please ask if you need more info.

(Since we're here, allow me a little off-topic rant: how come, even
though intel is the only graphics hardware developer that assists open-
source with writing drivers, intel graphics boards don't have good-
enough drivers to run a compositing manager correctly?!)
