I should add, when xorg.conf is altered so that DefaultDepth (in section
"Screen") is set to 24 X will start successfully.

As I understand it, with the i810 driver set to 24 bpp, it causes DRI to
be disabled.

I had it configured at 16 bpp to achieve DRI originally.

So, to work around this bug, the system loses direct rendering; hardly a
satisfactory situation.

The xorg version is 7.1.1 date May 2006, so I'll investigate later
versions if possible to see if this has been fixed upstream.
