Thanks for filing this bug. Have yu tried to open a new profile in
thunderbird? Start thunderbird from the command line

/usr/lib/thunderbird/thunderbird -P

and create a new profile an check if this freezes too.

If yes, try to reinstall thunderbird, and check if it happens again.
