This is probably because man filters out formatting characters when it's
writing to a pipe, since normally that interferes with all sorts of
things (e.g. grep); but w3m expects the formatting characters so that it
can do something useful with them. You can set MAN_KEEP_FORMATTING=1 in
the environment to avoid this behaviour. IMO w3mman should do this by
default; I'm opening a bug task for that.
