I was having this problem with my Canon SX10 IS, and I fixed it thus. The USB bus/device IDs (found through lsusb) led me to /dev/usbdev2.25*. I checked the permissions on these files and they were root:root 660 which means my user can't access them. My user is already in the plugdev group so I did "sudo chgrp plugdev /dev/usbdev2.25*", and then gThumb was able to import my photos again.
