This must be the most confusing bug report I have ever read.
Can you try to explain in few clear words what the problem actually is?
The only network variables that don't need an interface to be explicity 
specified are downspeedgraph and upspeedgraph (for which the default is eth0), 
so I guess you refer to these?
If the problem is instead that you don't want to have to specify the network 
interface being used, have you tried to use the if_up variable to cover for the 
most possible cases (see the conky man page for details)?
