I have the same problem with Sony NWZ-A628 but I did want to use the MTP
protocol because of label managing and so killing hald wasn't my chosen
solution.

I solved the problem installing the plugin for support for MTP devices
in RhythmBox (pay attention not to have it installed with that for iPod
management, they seemed to conflict, at least in my case), it prevents
the sony walkman to be mounted automatically by the ubuntu applet and
you can manage it successfully from rythmbox via MTP, but if you want to
open the device via nautilus you cannot and you need to use those
remedies previously described by kind supporters.
