@bryncoles Did you modify your xorg.conf i.e. as a workaround for the Intel driver performance loss? In case you still wanna try Compiz would you - at a freeze - press "alt-sysreq-k" many times (5-10) and wait 1 or 2 minutes? Sometimes I have to wait for the above described reaction, too.
