Lars - I have in the mean time upgraded to Jaunty and still cannot reproduce this with my HP OfficeJet 5510. I assume you are also using the HPLIP backend for SANE? All - as I can't reproduce this, unless one of you has some Perl experience and is prepared to hack scanimage-perl, the best I can do is trial and error.
