Andrew, this sounds similar to bug #326896.  Can you try the following
and let me know if it resolves the issue:

1. Open a terminal window and type "sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf"
2. Add the following three lines to the bottom of the file:
options snd slots=snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1 model=hp-m4
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
3. Save and close the file, then restart.
4. Verify if sound works after making the configuration changes.


Also, what is the make/model of your computer?
