Yes.  This now seems to be GNOME  bugzilla #579994, I think still
'unconfirmed'

Further update:
I've upgraded the system to Ubuntu 9.04 (going through 8.10, as required), and 
the problem is still there; unchanged.  It seems something in Nautilus, or 
something Nautilus uses, knows how, under some circumstances, to use a huge 
number of CPU cycles,  - per file - , to open directories   I can't help 
wondering if it's related to previously reported similar delays (or 'lockups') 
reported for Nautilus, which were apparently 'fixed' by avoiding the situations 
which triggered them. 

Additional observation: 
Switching to a different desktop with open windows will often re-dispatch the 
offending process to another CPU.  (No effect on switching to an empty 
desktop.)  Display related problem ???
