You mention testing with a Jaunty LiveCD and the device works again.
Have you gone ahead and upgraded your system? Does the device work
again? If not, could you please run the following from at Terminal:
apport-collect -p alsa-base 358476
** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
Status: New => Incomplete
