Thanks so much Mac. I had the exact problem with my toshiba m35x. I also had the battery indicator problem as well (I just installed 9.04 and discarded WinXP). I followed your steps on updating my bios and voila, it is booting up just fine and the battery indicator is working properly. I appreciate it-I love Ubuntu!
