I've an AMD 64, and installed Feisty Herd2; when trying to install Java
with the Add/Remove applications, I get the following message:
Sun Java 6 Web Start (32bit)
The use, modification and distribution of Sun Java 6 Web Start (32bit) is
restricted by copyright or by legal terms in some countries.
Sun Java 6 Web Start (32bit) cannot be installed on your computer type (i386).
Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided
to not support your computer type.
Under Ubuntu Edgy i386, I don't have the problem and Java installs
easily.
