I also added the cheese logs (generated by starting cheese from the command line) which reveals some errors, that might be relevant.
Furthermore I just installed linux- image-2.6.30-020630-generic_2.6.30-020630_i386.deb and the accompanying header files (taken from Ubuntu Mainline Kernel packages).
