It also seems fine here; I suggest as well as the info Pedro was asking for, when you try it keep a 'top' running in another gnome-terminal and see if you can what's happening; my guess is something is using all your memory - if you can see what it is it'll probably help and you should be able to kill it off before it kills your machine.
