So essentially there's "accidents" with both methods. With the
traditional F2 shortcut there's the F1 and F3 accident (never done that
myself), and with the click to rename there's the accidental entering
rename mode (which happens frequently enough to me that I've actually
noticed and am making an effort to share my opinion here).

I'd say your post, agro, validates my suggestion of having the default
as "click to rename" (btw, do you use icon or list view by default?) as
the default behaviour, but having the option to disable it for the
veteran GNOME users. Though really, there's always Kubuntu for those who
like "The Windows Way" :)
