The sane-utils package is build with the sane-backends source code. I don't see that this was recently built for Jaunty: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/sane-backends/. The latest changelog entry is in March. This is why I wonder if you have some 3rd party repository enabled supplying a sane-utils package that is not the official Ubuntu one.
