        Thanks for the prompt response.
        The only third party supplier I have listed in Repositories is:

        archives. canonical.com/unbuntu jaunty

        So.......?
        I've also reported a problem with Xsane i.e. while my  Brother
        MFC-215c works fine as a printer, Xsane doesn't recognise the
        scanning function, even though I've downloaded the appropriate
        drivers from Brother....

        Oh, for simple plug and play connections in Ubuntu, without
        these problems. *sigh*
