Unfortunately, I can't seem to reproduce this anymore. It seems to work fine with the Karmic Alpha 2 live cd, and with Jaunty kernel 2.6.28-13.17.
I have tried with a bunch of 4gb SDHC cards, and 2gb SD cards. The only one that is giving me a little grief is a cheap one that has a "Impact" sticker on it but identifies itself as "Lexar".
