Unable to get this behaviour with mainline kernel; however the sound is still misbehaving badly (actually worse). (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/391114) Usually the sata issue manifests before the sound issue, however with the mainline kernel the sound issue happens directly at boot (and switches into polling mode).
