I think an intuitive and probably easy-to-implement solution would be as follows: when the user clicks on the time, the calendar shows up, and when he clicks out it disappears. But when the calendar is open, it should have a little icon in the corner (like a pin or something) that when clicked "pins down" the calendar, so that it won't lose focus if the user clicks somewhere else.
