I'd like to have a script I can send to people complaining of autoupdate failure to gather the information needed to diagnose the problem. Here's a first draft. Along with generic update-notifier and update-manager information, it checks for the two problems I've seen personally: wrong permissions on /etc/cron.daily/apt and ethernet card that might be suffering from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.17/+bug/60764
