fwiw I think this bug is indeed Invalid. The size of the heap is the responsibility of glibc to manage and it appears (from what I've quickly turned up with google) to not aggressively shrink heap sizes. To show a memory leak you would need to run multiple iterations of the test in tabs of the same gnome-terminal process and show that memory usage increases each time. if you can run multiple iterations and the overall size remains roughly constant then it is not a leak (to the best of my understanding of these things, which is admitedly minimal).
