Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: fish

Steps to reproduce:

start gnome-terminal with fish as default shell
cd to a different directory
echo $PWD echoes the correct pwd
open a new tab in gnome-terminal
ls confirms, that the current working directory in the new tab is the same as
in the previous tab, but echo $PWD results in "~", which is wrong. Also, the
pwd indicator at the shell prompt displays "~".
