Public bug reported:

I upgraded my Karmic kernel from 2.6.30-13 to 2.6.31-1, which caused
high resolution to stop being detected. Despite the external monitor
having a native resolution of 1920 x 1200, xrandr reports only a max
resolution of 1280 x 1024:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 2048 x 2048
VGA1 connected 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 519mm x
324mm
   1280x1024 75.0*
   1024x768 75.1 60.0
   800x600 75.0 60.3
   640x480 75.0 60.0
   720x400 70.1
LVDS1 connected 1280x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 264mm x
159mm
   1280x768 59.9*
   0x0 0.0
TV1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

I can confirm the regression by going back to the still installed 2.6.30
kernel, which works as expected. I was inclined to report this problem
to bug 391720, but their problem is with 2.6.30 rather than 2.6.31.
