Dave Stroud: thanks for your suggestion, I was able to find the deb package Pidgin 2.5.8. it is however www.getdeb.net, instead of getdeb.COM. I note that the site warns that the current package has to be removed, so I take it that GDebi installer will not simply treat this as an update.
