I saw this exact problem yesterday with a Jaunty LPIA alternate ISO
image on a USB stick, created with UNetbootin (latest version on their
website).

I do wonder though, why can't we install an LPIA ubuntu using a live USB
instead of an alternate ISO? The live ubuntu version does not bork when
run on a usb stick.
