Hi Mathias, I was able to install php5-mysql after I installed mysql-client-5.1. And I am able to run mysql/PHP/Apache2 correctly on my setup.

Changed owner ship by following: sudo chown mysql:mysql /var/run/mysqld After these changes I am able to run mysql and connect to it. But after that when I was trying to install PHP5 and did sudo apt-get install php5mysql, the mysql installation broke again. To me it seems that php5mysql tries to install mysql-server-5.0 dependencies which conflicts with mysql-server-5.1 So I had to restart again from point 1. Right now I am trying to find how can I get php5mysql installed so that my LAMP installation goes through. Any inputs on this would be really great.
