I experienced the same problem running with the same hardware. I have an inspiron 1501.
Zasq, I also installed the linuxant and hsfmodem drivers. I recently got fed up and did a clean install with kernel 2.6.28.11 and haven't upgraded my kernel yet until this is sorted out. Perhaps it's a problem with the linuxant drivers?
