This has to be one of the more obscure & odd decisions made in Ubuntu. I installed the package firefox-3.5 and went to run it (I use KDE4) - hit Alt+F2 type "firefox" and both Firefox 2 and 3 turn up in KRunner results. No trace of Firefox 3.5. Check Kickoff and there is no trace of Firefox 3.5 in the menus either. Recheck that the firefox-3.5 package has been installed correctly.. yep it is.
Search again for the browser and I notice something with firefox-like logo called "Preview Browser, Shiretoko Web Browser" in the Kickoff menu.. Open it and what looks 100% like Firefox launches. All this does is serve to confuse the end user. When nearly everyone on the planet refers to Mozilla Firefox as "Firefox" it seems an odd decision to suddenly start referring to it as a special Ubuntu codename. At this point I'm still unsure whether or not I have the stable version of Firefox 3.5 installed on my machine (and I need to know that for website development). This may be "by design" but it's design by committee. In addition, quoting an obscure website that seems to have nothing to do with Ubuntu and which includes what looks like a quote from an IRC log with an apparent reason behind this decision just serves to confuse things even further. Why on earth can't it just be called "Firefox 3.5" so it's at least findable? I note that my non-default Firefox 2.0 (which I have installed for website testing purposes) is called "Web Browser, Firefox 2 Web Browser" in kickoff.
