@Wayne Cat: Thank you for the list of updates, that helped a lot. @all affected: So what I'm thinking is that given the variety of video cards/drivers and window managers, and also the upgrade list provided by Wayne Cat, that this is a problem caused by the most recent upgrade to GTK+.
To test this theory, I need you all to downgrade all of the packages in Wayne Cat's updates list with the version "2.17.3-0ubuntu1" (they all have "gtk" in the package name) to a version lower than that According to Launchpad, the version immediately preceding that one in Karmic is "2.17.2-0ubuntu2".
