I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04 (ubuntu-9.04-alternate-i386.iso). While this installation still comes with an "xorg.conf" the file is empty. "Display Preferences" detects the monitor as Samsung 22", the correct resolution is selected (1680x1050). Xorg.0.log is attached below.
