Long answer. I had 8.10 installed and running for months.
Deleting songs in my music folder I blew the file manager (Nautilus). I reinstalled 8.10 from a CD. I could not boot up. I reinstalled 6.06. Reformatting the entire disk. I got the package error upgrading 6.06 to 8.04. Interesting when I link through Administration to Update, the system does not show me there are new versions available (8.10 / 9.04). I have decided to stick with 8.04 for a while. I am a retired Systems Engineer and would rather golf then debug software anymore.
