Long answer.

I had 8.10 installed and running for months.

Deleting songs in my music folder I blew the file manager (Nautilus).

I reinstalled 8.10 from a CD.  I could not boot up.

I reinstalled 6.06.  Reformatting the entire disk.

I got the package error upgrading 6.06 to 8.04.  Interesting when I link
through Administration to Update, the system does not show me there are
new versions available (8.10 / 9.04). 

I have decided to stick with 8.04 for a while.

I am a retired Systems Engineer and would rather golf then debug
software anymore.
