1) did the update worked afterward? 2) How long did you let it hang?
3) do you have a lot of users? are you using LDAP or a nss configuration other than 'files' (maybe it is named 'compat' instead of files)? do you have users with an high UID? There were some reports that useradd is slow or even very slow when one of the question 3) has a positive answer.
